CASTLE WILLIAMS ISLAND
Castle Williams Island (located in present day Boston Harbor) is the birthplace of Prince Hall Freemasonry. On Monday, March 6, 1775, Sgt. John Batt of the 38th Foot Regiment, as WM of the Irish Lodge, initiated into Lodge #441 fifteen Black men now known as "The Immortal 15." These men were raised to sublime degree of Master Mason with limited rights. They could organize and were shortly thereafter granted the right to march in funeral processions, but had not yet received the right to initiate new members. They would not earn that right until they successfully petitioned in September 1784.
